Today, I got an email from a reader of mine asking for advice how she could improve her blog and start making money from it. I love receiving questions, because they give me material for my blog posts so, if you have any questions just leave them HERE.
So, lets get back to the question, I actually shot a video of me browsing her blog (wedontlikeit.com) and giving advice how it could be improved. The first thing that seemed strange was that she said that she is receiving 1500 daily average visits, but the Alexa rank was terrible so, I think she had mistaken with the stats. Anyways here’s a list of improvements that she could do to her blog.
Another thing that caught my eye was a white border in the banner, an easy way to remove it is to use PNG image file format, which makes the white color transparent.
The blog has two navigations, this is kinda confusing, definitely one should be removed.
Social Media Buttons
There’s too many social media buttons on the side and top, if you want you can put up social media widgets to grow you following, but put them more at the bottom of your page and not on the places that get viewed the most.
Top Right Corner
The top of your website gets the most attention and what you put there will get the most clicks so, you want to make sure you put there something that makes you money, in this example there were two pretty bad ads, a video and tons of social media buttons. I would replace all of them with an opt-in form or with Google AdSense widget.
The blog had a lot of duplicate content, which is very bad for your traffic, because you get a Google Panda penalty and then you start ranking lower on Google and receive less traffic. You can check your website for duplicate content with Copyscape.com.
Having spam comments on your blog is also duplicate content and usually these spammers leave links to bad sites and then you can get a Google Penguin penalty. To delete spam use a plugin called Akismet.
You are blogging to make money so, proper monetization is very important. First, decide on whether you want to build a list or just monetize with ads. If you are building a list then put a huge opt-in form at the top as I said before and you can also install a pop-up form on your blog with an opt-in form all of this will help to capture as many leads as possible.
If you want to monetize with ads again use either Infolinks or Google AdSense or both and put the widgets in the places that get viewed the most.
Not Mentioned In The Video
There’s actually two more mistakes that I forgot to mention in the video the first one being not optimized links. What do I mean by that is the links of blog posts look like this: http://wedontlikeit.com/?p=1001 when they should be like this http://wedontlikeit.com/the-title-of-the-blog-post/. This would be an SEO friendly link, you can set them up by going to your WordPress dashboard clicking Settings>Permalinks and choose the structure that you want to use. I use day and name.
The other mistake that I forgot to mention was that the blog posts don’t have proper sharing buttons. I recommend to use a plugin called Digg Digg to put big beautiful sharing buttons on your blog.
Watch the video for the rest of the mistakes that I spotted and what advice I gave to Anne hope this video will be helpful not just to her, but also for others that have blogs and are looking for ways how to improve them.
